product line - terrazzo
crafted in america, our terrazzo tile is made from tumbled stone in a cement base. these materials lend our Forage collection natural, neutral shades that offer the quiet versatility of solid-color tile with the visual interest of a pattern. perfectly at home in a mid-century setting, surrounded by wood paneling and an earthy palette, it also complements the classic glamor of marble and plaster or the clean serenity of ultramodern design.
what grout joint size, type, and color do you recommend?
clé recommends the use of mapei flexcolor cq tile grout and a 1/16" grout joint with this collection.
Grout color selection is always up to our client and/or their design professional. However, clé is often asked for our opinion on best grout selections for our tiles. And due to the large array of grout colors that are now available, clé would like to offer this general guideline on a foolproof grout color selection for any of your clé tiles.
- First, have your professional tile contractor complete your tile installation, except for the grout portion.
- Next, when ready to grout, ask your contractor to bring ALL grout color charts from his preferred grout manufacturers, for your review.
- Lastly, choose a time of day when you are most pleased with the lighting in your space (either natural lighting, installed lighting or a blend of both). During that lighting and time of day, select the grout color that best matches your tile selection.
Note that the full Mapei Flexcolor CQ color catalogue contains 40 colors to choose from. Visit the Mapei website to view.
do you offer trim?
as with all of our stone tiles, we do not offer trim for our terrazzo collection. trim is not a facet of completing your stone tile surfaces, however should you desire, exposed edges can be finished by your contractor to match the surface of the tiles or to create most forms of edge finishes.
can i use the forage terrazzo collection in the shower?
yes, specific waterproofing precautions need to be taken such as using a penetrating sealer like miracle 511 porous plus and use of a waterproof membrane under the tile. shower floors require a higher COF, in order to achieve this the tiles can be grooved or they can be cut into 4x4” (or smaller) squares to increase COF.
*please note that when using a waterproofing membrane the moisture in traditional mortars can warp the tile. in this instance we would recommend the use of a premium rapid setting mortar.
how much variation should I expect?
with the forage terrazzo collection you will find a polished surface with extreme color variation derived from natural aggregate set in a cement base. the tiles fall under the definition of V4 and T1 in our tile variation guide, which states:
V4 - heavy variation. typically, with these, there will be multiple shades or pigments present within each tile, and no two tiles will ever look the same.
T1 - light texture: production will result in slight physical variation in the surfaces of the tiles. overall there will be uniformity upon installation.
what should I expect with my order of forage terrazzo?
Forage Terrazzo pieces come packed face to face and back to back with an application of wax strips applied to one face of each of the face to face tiles. The wax strips can easily be removed with a plastic putty knife or similar.
Due to the extreme color and shade variations, it is very important to blend the tiles from all boxes once they arrive and place them in their installation area to ensure you have the layout you want before installing.
Dust and residue from shipping should be cleaned prior to installing.
how do i clean the forage terrazzo collection?
the cement based terrazzo tiles are chemically sensitive so only mild pH neutral cleaners should be used. soapless cleaners are preferred because they minimize streaks and film. mild, phosphate-free, biodegradable liquid dishwashing soaps or powders are acceptable if rinsing is thorough.
showers and baths: soap scum can be minimized by using a squeegee after each use and using liquid as opposed to bar soaps.
why do you suggest i order at least 15% more than my measurements?
Industry standard suggests adding at least 15% overage due to tile cuts, potential breakage, or future repairs.
