the architect's palette is an edited collection of elongated planks of highly artisanal terracotta tile. coated in a silky matte finish with a subtle crackle effect texture, these hand-hewn tiles are made of traditional, rustic italian clay and are available in four architect-honed hues.

the traditional "listello" shape was typically used in italy as a border, but this elongated form is now being used as a field tile. it's linear form is easily converted to an elevated herringbone, stack, and subway pattern and can be used on walls, wet spaces, and floors with low traffic. over time the tile can develop a crackled patina typical of time-worn italian tile.

blotter is a versatile "architect's" white. good in most applications where you need the white to blend into a variety of settings whether a warm, cool, southern or northern exposure.

please note - Floor installations of Architect’s Palette can only withstand residential low traffic and will develop a crackled patina.

faq

How much variation should I expect?

With Architect’s Palette you will see a slight textural variation but no color variation in the glaze. They fall under the definition of V1 T2 in our Tile Variation Guide which states:

Color Variation-

V1: low variation. all tiles will exhibit some percentage of variation from lot to lot. as with all tiles, blending before installation is always recommended.

T2: light texture: production will result in slight physical variation in the surfaces of the tiles. overall there will be uniformity upon installation.

Where do you recommend installing Architect’s Palette?

Architect’s Palette is downright perfect for a kitchen backsplash, shower walls, fireplace surround, feature wall, powder room and entry hall. Limit floor usage to light residential and outdoor use to locations not affected by freeze thaw. Over time the tile can develop a crackled patina.

What color grout should I use?

We recommend Mapei Flexcolor CQ in the shade Timberwolf, however, you may use lighter or darker Mapei Flexcolor CQ shades based on your projects needs.

What size grout joint should I use?

At clé, we like to always recommend the smallest grout joint possible for a tile installation. With that in mind, we like to suggest 1/4" grout joint for our Architect's Palette collection. But, there are those who might prefer a larger joint size for a more pronounced texture on certain pattern designs, such as herringbone.

Do I need to seal Architect’s Palette tiles?

Architect’s Palette tiles should be sealed for all applications to maintain their appearance and avoid staining.

Do you have additional installation information?

Installation methods should conform to the tile council of america “Handbook for Ceramic Tile Installation” (current edition). Tiles from several different cartons should be mixed to achieve the best overall blend. Other systems are available and the manufacturer’s recommendations should be followed.

Before grouting, use a penetrating sealer, like Miracle 511 Porous Plus, to seal tiles. After the sealed tiles have fully dried, grout using an unglazed grout such as Mapei Flexcolor CQOnce the grout has cured per the manufacturer's instructions, tiles will need to be cleaned prior to applying the final coat of sealant. Remove any grout haze so it’s not sealed into the tiles. Any grout haze left by Mapei Flexcolor CQ can be removed with Mapei Ultracare Heavy-Duty Stone, Tile & Grout Cleaner.

After grouting and cleaning have been completed, apply a final coat of Miracle 511 Porous Plus Sealer to the entire installation (tiles and grout lines). Always follow the sealant manufacturer’s instructions for reapplying sealant.
