otherwise known as ‘zillij’ or ‘zellij’—is the arabic word for tile dating back to the 10th century when this tile-making craft began. these hand-chiseled moroccan tiles acquire their coloring from the historic clay body that is a rich terracotta, inherently forcing it's hue through the glazes. baked in wood-fired kilns loaded with olive pits, these glazes feature a rich, undulating gloss surface with specks, pits, and chips created from the firing process. the variegated edges combined with the shimmering, glazed surface dazzle like sequins elevating any kitchen or bathroom, wall or floor and in our view make zellige, this moroccan terracotta tile the prima materia of the tile world.
