why we love strata linea

we revere stone for its character and history: every piece an expression of geologic and cultural history, every piece unique. our strata linea bundles’ mix of ten different stones celebrates and showcases the diversity of color and texture in the material. as strata linea features reclaimed stone, it’s also sustainable.

our bundles–which come in different lengths and widths–can be mixed for a truly bespoke installation, offering almost infinite possibilities. with their remarkable colors and embedded ancient fossils, reclaimed surfaces have never looked quite so good.

a collaboration with yula raghmour

yaghmour has taken a simple idea – repurposing stone left over from construction projects – and created a beguiling line of objects and furniture called kutleh (the arabic word for block). while kutleh’s projects center around bonding layers of stone into a mass block, clé collaborated with yaghmour on creating strata linea, a tile line of different sized planks that feature the rich variety of leftover, highly sought-after stone.

grout

clé recommends the use of mapei flexcolor cq grout and a 1/16” grout joint with this collection. grout color selection is always up to our client and/or their design professional. however, clé is often asked for our opinion on best grout selections for our tiles. and due to the large array of grout colors that are now available, clé would like to offer this general guideline on a foolproof grout color selection for any of your clé tiles.

  • first, have your professional tile contractor complete your tile installation, except for the grout portion.
  • next, when ready to grout, ask your contractor to bring ALL grout color charts from his preferred grout manufacturers, for your review.
  • lastly, choose a time of day when you are most pleased with the lighting in your space (either natural lighting, installed lighting or a blend of both). during that lighting and time of day, select the grout color that best matches your tile selection.

note that the full mapei flexcolor cq color catalogue contains 40 colors to choose from. visit the mapei website to view.

for more information about grouting please see our strata linea installation & maintenance guides.

do i need to seal strata linea tiles?

natural stone should be sealed before and after grouting to maintain their appearance and avoid staining. we recommended sealing grout lines and tile surface in all applications (dry and wet) as the final step of installation.

exterior walls require vertical weather flashing and waterproof, penetrating sealant. exterior floors must be installed above grade with waterproof, penetrating sealant.

installing outdoors in areas that experience freeze/thaw, the installation must be completely sealed and maintained with a waterproof sealant.

for applications in wet areas, specific waterproofing precautions need to be taken such as using a waterproof membrane under the tile and use of a penetrating sealer.

for more information about sealing please see our strata linea installation & maintenance guides.

do you offer trim for your strata linea tile?

at clé we follow the international model of no trim and highly recommend our clients to do the same. below are the trim alternatives we recommend for this collection.

- if your project needs to turn a corner either inwardly or outwardly, mitering the tiles to meet seamlessly in a corner gives it the cleanest, crafted finish.

- a visible stone tile edge can be polished to make the side match the main surface of the tile.

- for exposed joint edges, running a bead of caulk or grout on the joint edge is an easy and simple way of finishing the installation.

- like with any of our tiles, you can also build out the sheetrock so that the surface of the finished sheetrock is flush with the surface of the tile.

how do i take care of my strata linea tiles?

the natural stones that make up the strata collection (marble, limestone, travertine, etc.) are chemically sensitive so only mild ph neutral cleaners should be used. as with any finely decorated stone product, clé discourages the use of any surface cleansers or scrubbing pads. cleaning stone requires only mild soap, water and soft cloths. soapless cleaners are preferred because they minimize streaks and film. mild, phosphate-free, biodegradable liquid dishwashing soaps or powders or stone soaps are acceptable if rinsing is thorough.

always avoid harsh chemicals and acidic or alkaline cleaning products. miracle tile & stone cleaner is effective as an ongoing maintenance cleaner and is gentle for everyday use.

grout lines can be cleaned with warm water and a nonmetal bristled cleaning brush.

over time, a natural patina will occur on floors as they are maintained and naturally wear. topical sealants will require periodic stripping and resealing—please refer to a professional for this. single coat reapplication of the penetrating sealant is required once a year in shower applications due to the continuous exposure to water.

see our strata linea installation & maintenance guides for more information.

what type of finish should i expect with this collection?

our strata linea tiles come with a polished surface. polishing is a surface treatment in which the tile is ground down to the very finest level to give it a shiny look.

what types and levels of variation and imperfections should i expect?

with the strata linea collection you will find a polished finish with extreme color and surface variation given the nature of stone and reclaimed products. you can also expect to find some texture and size variation in the tiles of your order. before installing, make sure to layout your tile and blend so that variations in color and veining are where you would like them to be throughout the installation. do not install without blending tiles from all boxes.

variation and imperfection ratings:

strata linea tiles are rated 'level 4 heavy' for color variation, 'level 1 smooth' for texture variation, and 'level 1 slight' for size variation.

see illustrations in the technical specifications section above, and read more about the ratings in our tile variation and imperfections guide

how do I sample strata linea tiles?

each sample features one 12 inch tile from your selected bundle and a set of 10 stone chips constituting the stones found in strata linea

how will my strata linea samples compare to my actual order?

as noted in the variation and add on orders sections of our faq, color and size variation between batches of strata linea tiles, in addition to variation from tile to tile, is to be expected given that strata linea is composed of natural, reclaimed stone. this makes it unlikely that your sample will be a perfect match with your actual order.

how are strata linea bundles sold?

clé sells strata linea bundles in three different plank widths: 3”, 4”, or 5”, with each bundle including a set number of tiles in 12”, 18”, and 24” lengths.

each strata linea bundle features a mix of ten types of stone: travertine, ajloun, jerusalem, sahrawi, ma'an, karak, beirzeit, daba'a, carrara and crema.

please note: stones can not be individually specified. while every stone will be represented within each bundle, amounts of each stone to be provided can not be guaranteed. the overall color distribution within each bundle will lean neutral, with gray, pink, and purple accents.

some strata linea pieces come with mesh backing for added reinforcement. please follow the standard installation instructions for the reinforced pieces as described in our installation & maintenance guides.

why do you suggest i order at least 15% more than my measurements?
